Simile: Pg. 125 Meg says about a man they saw: " He's like the white rabbit."

Pg.116 about the mothers of the children on Camazotz: '... and out came women like a row of paper dolls.'

These are two out of the required three at my school. These page numbers are from my version, and there are many different ones.

Some similarities are:

  • The characters are pretty much the same.
  • The events are almost exactly the same.

The novel and film are almost exactly the same, but in the film the characters don't look like they are described as in the novel. The film also simplified the plot slightly.

There are actually several small ones, although I was pleased by how well they stuck to the book. Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which are introduced a couple of minutes too late. The with the brain scene on Camazotz is slightly awry. The movie left out all references to Jesus and The Bible, which was a large part of what intrigued me about the books. The scene where Mrs. Whatsit flies into the Murry household was cut short. Calvin O'Keefe was introduced too early. Meg and Charles Wallace didn't meet him until they went to the haunted house. Charles Wallace hadn't started school yet at the time of A Wrinkle in Time, Calvin's little brother doesn't pick on Charles until A Wind in The Door. Perhaps the most saddening difference of all was the movies treatment of Aunt Beast. The part where Aunt Beast finds a suitable name for herself in Meg's mind, and the part about the awful looking, grey dinner that tasted too wonderful even to imagine, were cut entirely. Going deeper, they movie didn't focus at all on the idea that a blind culture might be a happier one, since we could focus on what things are instead of what they appear to be. All that being said, it would be quite impossible to fit every detail of Madeleine L'Engle's beautiful book into a feature length movie. Hollywood gets an A for effort
