Energy saving features for a home come in two parts: the physical building and the occupants.

Energy saving features of a home's building include:

  • sufficient insulation in the walls including basement walls) and attic to keep the heat in during the winter and the heat out in the summer
  • ENERGY STAR double or triple pane windows
  • sufficient weather stripping around exterior doors
  • sufficient caulking around windows and cable lines going into / out of the home
  • LED light bulbs (not CFL's which contain Mercury)
  • Solar screens on the outside of south facing windows in the summer to prevent much of the sun's UV ray's from entering the home to cause excessive heat
  • sufficient attic ventilation to let the hot air escape to the outside

Energy savings features of a home's inhabitants include:

  • willingness to adopt energy saving habits of all types from turning off lights in rooms no one is using to turning down the thermostat and wear more layers of clothing in the winter
