Some examples of a scrupulous conscience might be:

  • Many people consider the US Penny worthless or so common that no one has true "ownership" of them. A child who has little money knows every penny matters. This child sees a woman drop some change. She picks up the quarters, but misses a penny that rolled behind her. The child picks it up and offers it to the woman, because it belongs to her.
  • Equally, pens, pencils, and 12" rulers are very common to see in schools and classrooms. Many people consider the No. 2 pencil about like pennies-- worth little and easy to get another one. But when a boy finds two pencils dropped in the hallway, he turns them into his teacher. The teacher, in turn, asks the class to check their bags to see if someone lost two pencils. No one claims them. But the next day, a girl from a previous class held in 2nd period notices she lost her pencils. The teacher returns them, realizing she asked the wrong class to check their belongings.
  • Banks often charge enormous fees for everything. A teenager's father opens the dad's bank statement and sees the bank made a mistake--in the dad's favor. The teen begins to pester dad for new music CDs, claiming "we have enough money to buy them". The dad refuses, and calls the bank to report the error.
  • In a grocery store, a mom gives the cashier $50.00 for the food purchased. The bill came to $42.25. In a hurry, the cashier hands the mom $42.25 as "change". The mom stares at her hand for a second, surprised. She quickly thinks to put it in her pocket and get away before anyone notices. BUT instead, she tells the cashier, you gave me the wrong change, and gives the money back. The poor mom could have used the "free money" but it would have cost the cashier her job. Plus, the mom has a strong conscience. She could have gotten away with keeping it, but it was not right to do.
  • The landlord was a man over 60 years old. He hasn't been the nicest landlord, but the family wants to live there. The rent is only $400 -- very cheap for 2 bedrooms. The landlord usually mails a rent receipt AFTER the family pays the rent. But this month, the family was late by 3 days. However, in the morning mail, the woman received a rent receipt AS IF she had already paid. She could use that receipt to argue she did "pay". But that is wrong to do. She calls the landlord and arranges to make the rent payment--- and gives the false mistaken rent receipt back to the landlord the next day.
  • The 9th grade has a big test. The kids are all nervous; if they fail they don't pass to 10th grade. Several kids talked about cheating on the test, but other kids refused to participate. During the test, one boy notices another boy cheating---the first boy takes his paper up to the teacher's desk and whispers what he just saw. The teacher sends him back to his desk. A minute later, the teacher removes the cheater from the room and finds "crib notes" he wrote on his wrist. As a result, the whole class has to retake a different test the next day. The boy who reported the cheater only scored 81%--- but he felt good because he did the right thing. The cheater got expelled from school for 10 days. Being honest on tests matters.
  • Some kids don't like to write term papers. A girl tried to buy one someone else wrote. But another girl, who detested writing, decided to write her own words and not cheat. The girl who cheated at first got an A+. But the other girl decided to report the cheating. The paper happened to be about "morals". The girl who cheated got an F and the one who reported her got an A-- only 50% for her writing, which wasn't great writing---but another 50% for having the morals to stand up and report wrongdoing.
  • An armored truck was rolling down the highway. It hit a bump, and the back door flew open. Bags of money flew out, burst, sending bills floating through the air. Drivers stopped their cars right on the highway to scoop up the "free" money. Most drove away after stuffing their shirts and pants with 20s and 50s. However, the next day, many people turned the money into the police--- because the money wasn't theirs. (True story, 2015.)
  • A woman was working as a babysitter for a well-off couple. The couple installed a hidden nanny-cam. They left out several 20s in plain sight. The woman never touched it, and just did her job. She said it didn't tempt her, because she knows right from wrong, and stealing from anyone is wrong.
