I don't remember if this was in the book, but during the movie, when Billy was on his way home from town after purchasing his puppies and stopped to camp for the night, a mountain lion appeared, but he built the fire bigger to scare it away. Later near the end, Old Dan sacrificed himself to save Billy from a mountain lion. And Ann died not long after from a broken heart.
