Some biographers speculate that Cornell first made his signature boxes to "amuse" his brother, who was confined by cerebral palsy to a wheelchair. However, they are not particularly "amusing", but thought-provoking instead. Cornell filled the boxes with star maps, cheap toys, broken bits of beautiful things, and photos of birds, beautiful women, souvenirs, and a variety of other things. Perhaps the boxes were meant to enable his brother to see beyond the strict confines of his wheelchair. In my opinion, however, as an amateur student of Cornell, I note that Cornell was reclusive and shy, and in later years rarely left his house. The boxes may have also, or instead, represented Cornell's own wish to escape the boundaries of his unassuming house and personality: to fly into the stars, or soar with the brightly-colored parrots and wise owls he featured, or express his fervent feelings towards unattainable women. The broken pipes and dolls may have represented his "broken" brother. The boxes he used for his works may have represented how he felt "boxed in" by his responsibilities to his brother and widowed mother, responsibilities that caused him to leave school at a young age, work thereafter at largely menial jobs, and avoid relationships (Cornell never married).
