One metaphor from the Twilight book is the comparison of Bella's blood to her being like a "zombie" to Edward. Another metaphor is the description of Edward's eyes as "hard as onyx" when he is upset or in a dangerous situation. Additionally, Bella's feeling of being lost without Edward is likened to feeling like a "black hole" in her chest.

According to Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight Sage, one of the main underlying metaphors of the vampire characters in her books, is that if you are stuck in life, or by a decision you believe you had to make, you can always take a different path. You can always choose to do something different. The vampire clan is "stuck" in time, ageless, and they need blood to survive, yet they found another path to sustain themselves. They drink animal blood instead of killing humans.
