In my opinion it would be alot easier (and it would make your guinea pig more comfortable) if you just bought a cage for him/her. If the room is carpeted, putting just bedding on the floor is especially not a good idea. The amount of clean-up that will take is not worth it. Guinea pig's urine is suprisingly clear, so you might come home one day and not know that your guinea pig has soaked the carpet until you smell it. Guinea pig cages aren't usually expensive, depending on the size you want. I suggest about 3x2 ft of cage size for each guinea pig, as they need space. The prices usually range from 10-70$. I got two guinea pigs and two separate large cages for only $30. And another bad point about just the boards and such is that if you have any other pets, such as cats or dogs, they can easily climb over the edges, leaving your guinea pig as a trapped snack. There is also the chance the guinea pig could jump out. I would suggest just going to your local pet store and buy a cage.
