Forged by Fire is a book which addresses many social-issues, such as child abuse (neglect, physical, and sexual)and poverty-socio-economic conditions that influence the behavior of individuals unfortunate enough to be victims of their circumstance, to name a few, from the perspective of Gerald, the protagonist and Angel, his younger sister. Although she loves him, Gerald's mother, Monique who is addicted to drugs, leaves him at home alone at the age of three. While playing with a cigarette lighter, he accidently sets fire to their apartment. His mother is sent away to prison for child abandonment and endangerment and Gerald is taken in by his wheel-chair bound grand Aunt Queen, a formidable woman, who loves him very much. she recognizes that her niece, Monique, loves her grand nephew but because of her circumstances, single-parenthood, poverty, and drug addiction, is prevented from caring for the child as she should. The relationship between Gerald and Aunt Queen is close and loving. Gerald for the first time is enjoying stability in his home life, but that is about to come to an end as we read by the end of chapter four. After an absence of six years.to Gerald's dismay, Monique has returned on his ninth birthday to reclaim her rights as his mother.
