Tapestries are a type of art. Often they are hung on walls, however to be considered a tapestry the piece must be woven. This distinction, often leads to miscategorizations of tapestries, such as the Bayeux Tapestry, which is in-fact an embroidery.

This form of art was most common at the end of middle ages and medieval times. The earliest tapestries were woven in the third century AD, in the 14th century tapestries saw a revival and grew in popularity becoming quite common in the 17th century. Today they can be found throughout the world.
