1. Spiral - the spiral is achieved through placing a cotton shirt on a flat surface and twisting it from the center into a ball and securing with rubber bands. This is the most common one.
2. Concentric Circles- winding rubber bands at various intervals from the center of a cotton shirt.
3. Marble - tightly twisting and marbles (or coins) to achieve small star burst patterns.
4. Peace Sign - begins with a peace sign drawn in washable ink then shirt is folded into small pleats at the bottom of the peace sign and the inner legs of the peace sign. The strategically placed folds resemble a closed umbrella. This is the most challenging to make.

The term "tiedye" refers to a dying technique whereby one knots up fabric before it is dyed in order to produce patterns within the dyed material. It works because if you knot the fabric, the dye cannot reach into the knotted areas of the fabric and tends to produce an un-dyed area in the shape of a starburst pattern on the fabric.
