Fossils form due to several chemical and physical processes. Minerals have to sink deep into the bones, replacing organic matter. Layers of sediment build up and compress the remains. The small spaces between bones must be filled in by sediment. The fossils must remain in the rock until uncovered by erosion or excavation.

The four steps of fossilization are:

1. death of the organism

for ex. a fish

2. deposition: this process occurs quickly

for ex. a fish goes to the bottom of the sea and starts to get burried in sediment.

3. compaction: this process takes 100s-1000s of years

for ex. fish compacting under several layers of sediment

4. turns to fossil: this process takes 10,000s-millions of years.
