(In the broad sense) The power of the police is derived from the authority of the Executive Branch of government (of which the police are a part) to enforce the laws and regulations enacted by the Legislative Branch of Government. (In a more narrow sense) Police power is confined by the jurisdiction in which they are employed or assigned. (for example: City A's police cannot go to County B's jurisdiction and exercise their authority).
