Dubai [دبي] used to be called Al-Wasl [الوصل] - which means "the connection", because the two parts of the city -Deira [ديره] and Bur Dubai [بر دبي]- were connected to each other by Khor Dubai [خور دبي] (Dubai Creek). People used to use "Al-Abra" [العبره] -which are small boats- to cross the creek. Dubai -or duba- are small locusts who still don't have fixed wings. It was called that name because there were a lot of locusts in there before people started living.
