Well, "intellectual" can be used as an adjective or a noun, but i suppose you're wanting the noun version: Alot of the ancient intellect came from philosophy (first in Greece), then while Rome was conquering Greece, they spent time talking to the Greek philosophers and picked up on their ideas. Rome then acquired some of their own philosophers (intellectuals).
