The U.S. was competing with Russia at the time Neil Armstrong had landed on the moon. When Armstrong landed on the moon, it had meant everything to the U.S. and it still means everything to not only them, but society also, today! It showed that the US was clearly ahead in the Space Race, the race to explore space. This also included the US claiming the moon as it's own territory. It was just one of the ways the West and the East block were competing in the cold war as opposed to bombing each other.
