The cuticle is a useful adaptation in plants but not in algae because: in order for plants to live on land, they need a cuticle to prevent water loss during dry climates. Algae live in the water, therefore they don't need a cuticle to survive. They use their adaptations to absorb the water and nutrients around their watery environments. Source: My straight "A" brain
Coralline algae is classed as a red algae. Red algae is unique because it has adapted to be able to photosynthesise not only in light (producing O2) but also in darkness and at night (producing CO2). This means that coralline algae can still thrive in low light, as long as the water has a high enough oxygen content.
As far as i know, calcareous means "containing or pertaining to calcium".
