Well, depending on what you are using it for there are different kinds of advantages and disadvantages.
If you are using it on a desktop or home computer one of the advantages is the ability to allow more devices of a particular port type to be utilized at the same time. One disadvantage is if you have a 3Gbps port, with a port expander installed that can support up to seven devices, only has a max of 3Gbps throughput bandwidth divided by each device; or however many are plugged in and being used. The more devices you have plugged in the less throughput bandwidth that port can use.

A port expander is computer hardware that uses one port on a computer to connect more than one device. By using a port expander, it reduces the performance and speed more than if one just used discs. In some cases a SAS expander may be cheaper than more than one port. However, the more devices that have been connected, the less bandwidth there will be to use.
There are only two ports available which are made by expander hardware. These ports include the following products: a port expander and a port replicator.
i think there are 6
everything from the space shuttle to marine systems PC's and Mac and even some cars have some sort of port expander as it is defined
desadvantage of brian drian
what is desadvantage of home trade
Judging from your question, I am sure you're a first year AD NSA student at ITT-Tech are you not? lol. There can be a port expander for nearly all types of port slots. If you have only 4 or 6 onboard USB slots and need more than that, you can get a cord-driven USB hub to house more. If you only have one FireWire port, no worries, they can be daisy-chained to make up to iirc 172 total FW port devices. Only one DVI? No problem, a splitter is the same as a expander. Any device that makes more than one access where only one existed before is an expander. A KVM switch makes one keyboard and mouse and speaker setup work with more than one computer at a time. Handy for servers and offices that the IT Director has a lot of work with inept staff and not alot of time or room to make face appearances in the other offices.

The only desadvantage is that if you want to gain weght its going to be hard for you
A port expander, or more commonly know as a port replicator or docking station, is generally computer specific. A port replicator does not introduce new hardware, but merely a means to give the port a physical connection. The connector between the computer and the port replicator provides an electrical conduit between the device it's self and the port. There are USB port replicators, but these devices do not offer the same functionality as a true port replicator, because they are limited in speed by the USB port.
