The advantages: it's quicker, and that's how scientists do it

Disadvantages? Not sure, because very few people outside of maybe a junior-high Introduction to Physical Sciences class would write one using words at all. Which would be better:

with words: sodium hydroxide reacted with hydrochloric acid gives table salt and water

with symbols and formulas: NaOH + HCl -> NaCl + H2O

You DO have to know what the formulas mean, but that's why you're in science class!

Chemical are codes used in chemical equations?

1. The representation of chemicals in chemical equations is made by formulas.2. The word code has another sense in chemistry; as an example, the digital code of the American Chemical Society - Chemical Abstract Service (CAS No).

How are compounds and formulas related?

All chemical compounds will have a chemical formula. For instance, the calcium chloride has formula CaCl2. Elements, on the other hand, have chemical symbols. Chemical reactions can be represented by chemical equations.

A chemical reaction that shows only the formulas but not the relative amounts of the reactants and products is an?

Skeleton equations do not show the relative amounts of reactants and products (are "unbalanced"). Balanced equations do show the relative amounts of the reactants and products.
