It allows you to start a new page immediately. This prevents the need to keep hitting the return key until the end of the page. It reduces formatting errors and having text move onto the wrong pages. It gives you better control over your document.

A page break immediately brings text after that onto a new page. This saves having to press the Return key repetitively to reach the start of the next page. Doing that is not a good idea for formatting reasons, as things won't always go where you want when you insert more text. So using a Page Break is much better and the right way to do it.

Is a manual page break also known as a soft page break?

No, a manual page break and a soft page break are not the same. A manual page break is inserted by the user to force content to start on a new page, while a soft page break is automatically inserted by the application based on the page layout settings.

What type of break can you insert if you want to force the text to begin on next page?

A Page Break. Page break is the point where you wish your page to end. It can be just after entering two lines or 10 lines. Beyond that point nothing can be written on that page. If text is already present there, it is moved on to the next page. Go to Insert tab in ribbon menu, towards the left, you will find 'Page break' insertion button. Deleting an existing page break is bit more technical though.
