You meet lots of new people who can also help you out later on. It also minimizes the chance of you being stuck in a designated sport group or class and not knowing anyone. Sometimes it can get tedious if you're not really that interested in the specfic extra curric. group, most times it's worth it.

The purpose of having extra-curricular activities in schools is to broaden your knowledge of the world, give you something interesting to do, help you to learn a new skill, and yes, as the previous answerer suggested, if you take up a new hobby through ECAs, then it does look good on any application to University etc.

Primarily it is intended to make the 'scholars'... students, fit and ready for the challenges in future life and to develop a sense of healthy competition, co-operation, enhance leadership qualities, diligence, punctuality team spirit and try to augment the latent creative talents and skills. Some children when assigned with a responsibility to provide leadership and guidance to their fellow school mates they feel as if their confidence and sense of achievement is boosted.
