George Orwell has a good list of basic rules that are still useful!

1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing or hearing - if it's common, don't use it!
2. Never use a long word when a short one will work!
3. If you can cut out a word without changing the meaning of the sentence, cut it!
4. Never use passive voice when you can use active!
5. Never use a foreign phrase, scientific words, or jargon if you can think of a way to say it in plain old English!
6. Break any of these rules before you write anything that sounds outrageous!

When writing an academic text, the author must remember the age group and academic status of the targeted audience. Text for college students should of course be thoroughly researched for accuracy and the inclusion of different points of view on the subject at hand. Generally speaking academic texts are no more than 500-600 pages maximum. The index & bibliography needs to be as inclusive as possible. A new text on a well known subject such as the US Civil War, needs to contain new information and or a different perspective then the many hundreds of previously written texts on this well read subject.
