A salt water or saline pool is still a chlorine pool the difference is that no the chlorine is made automatically by a chlorine generator. the water feel nicer on the body when you swim in it and you are not faced with storing chlorine out of the reach of children any more. Here are some comments from other wiki users re Salt water pools.

chlorine generator is easy, efficient and cost effective. Of course there are cheaper ways to sanitize your pool. Most owners find they like the increased softness from a little salt in the water and it's easier to maintain a clean pool. When your not home it's especially easy and if you happen to go on vacation for a week or two. Your pool professional can recommend and professionally install the right unit for your pool. That also reminds me I know someone who doesn't have a heater for their in ground pool no doubt they still swim.

Initially the salt system will be considerably more expensive. You have the cost of the salt cell, control panel and the salt for the pool. Over the long run though, the system will pay for itself. Salt is not used up so the only adding needed is what is lost during back-washing the filter, splashing and what people remove with them when getting out of the pool. IMO the salt system is a lot easier to maintain. once you have everything set properly, it will run and produce chlorine on its own. No more storing or handling harsh chemicals. Best part, you can leave for a month and come home to a clean pool instead of a slime pit. For more information visit howtobuildaningroundpool.com

My neighbor across the street has been telling me for years how much he likes his salt chlorine generator and how I should switch to one too. That I am still living in the stone age and should get with modern technology. I have been using 12% liquid chlorine for many years. He paid $1800 for his chlorine generator about 8 years ago and has had to replace the electrode cells twice at $650 each time. My pool is 26,000 gallons and his is 20,000. My pool consistently uses about $100 a year in chlorine at $2.75 a gallon and maybe 3 gallons of acid at $3.25 a gallon. I run my filter 3 hours a day in the summer and half that in winter. My neighbor must run his pump 8 hours in the summer and 5 in the winter to keep his pool chlorinated, spending about $150 a month more than I do. The corrosive salt has eaten up his very expensive artificial rock waterfall and concrete deck exposing the rock and sand in it and now needs to be replaced. He recently got a quote from a pool remodeling company for $12,000 to replace the waterfall and $8,000 to replace the concrete deck or $4,000 to put a coating on it. He also had to replaster his pool 2 years ago for $4,500 and mine is still in very good condition. I don't know if the salt contributed to that but I suspect it did. He has spent at least $20,000 more to repair and maintain his pool than I have.....so what were those benefits again? I take his kids and mine fishing in the boat we bought with the money we didn't have to spend on the pool. Living in the stone age isn't so bad after all.

Fresh water pool that you are thinking of converting to a Salt Water system your neighbors tell you that they have little or no maintenance with their Salt system?

I have a fresh water pool that I am thinking of converting to a Salt Water system. My neighbors tell me that they have little or no maintenance with their Salt system. The question I have is if I convert to a salt system why do I have to spend $1,000 on a Chlorine Generator.? If I add the salt, to change the softness and control the Algae then instead of purchasing a Chlorine Generator and paying the electricity costs why don't I just use my present automatic chlorinator with Chlorine Tablets? After a process called electrolysis is using the box of electronics breaks down the salt in the salt water In a salt system the electronic box is connected to the electrodes in the "Cell". So my point is that instead of generating chlorine from salt why don't I just add it like I don now with my fresh water system..

Yes as a mater of fact that is what salt water pool normally is. With a salt water pool there is a electronic salt water chlorinator installed that uses the salt in the water to create chlorine. However if you don't have a salt water chlorinator and prefer the feeling of a salt water pool then there is no reason not to add salt to the pool as well as keeping up the chlorine yourself.
