When a river floods, it deposits soils and clays which are very rich in nutrients and create much better growing conditions for crops and food for agriculture. Living on a floodplain then takes advantage of these natural processes to use these in supplying more food for a population of people.

A big problem in the UK is that developers have been allowed to build new estates on flood-plains for no good reason other than possibly lower land-purchase costs - people buy there without thinking, then complain about flooding and its consequences! if you look at many very old river-side villages and towns - anything from, say Mediaeval times onwards - you notice that the oldest buildings are all up on the valley sides or at least on higher ground within the flood-plain. The local builders knew from accumulated knowledge that the river might burst its banks every now and then.
