Hypo-allergenic cotton tamponsBrands; Cottons, Natracare, Maxim or Seventh Generation
Unlike other tampons which are made from chemically treated bleached rayon, cotton tampons are made from 100% cotton without any sort of bleaching and completely hypo-allergenic. Cotton tampons pose lower risks of TSS, vaginal infections and irritation so the least likely to cause problems for new users, cotton also has lower friction than rayon.
Always use lowest absorbency. This is important to reduce risk of TSS as well as to prevent discomfort through friction and the drying effect of using too high an absorbency. Use lowest absorbency and if it leaks within 1-2 hours consider using a higher absorbency, but if the tampon is dry or brown in places after 4-6 hours use a lower absorbency or switch back to using liners/pads.

Non-applicator.Applicator tampons are designed to reduce contact between the users fingers and their genitals or menstrual flow, although some people find applicator tampons easier non-applicator are best to start with. Non-applicator are simpler, have rounder tips, and most importantly allow a user to feel for resistance so they can more easily guide the tampon into place.

Avoid rayon tampons - Tampax, Playtex, Kotex.Opt for cotton tampons - Emerita, Cottons, Natracare.

Cotton tampons are much safer than rayon tampons so far less risk of vaginal infections, irritation, and Toxic shock syndrome, but also cotton tampons are softer and hypo-allergenic so more comfortable to use than rayon tampons. You may also want to try sponge or soft tampons too.

Always use lowest absorbency - good rule of thumb is to use lowest absorbency first, if it leaks within 1-2 hours it's safe to use the next absorbency up, if it's not saturated with blood after 4-6 hours then use lower absorbency or if already using lowest absorbency switch to pads.

Non-applicator are best - applicators are cultural in that they're about reducing contact with genitals and not so much about ease of use, non-applicator are easier as they're simpler and give better control for correct insertion (plus less waste to add to landfill, and less bulk to carry with you).
