there are many cancer causing agents in cigarettes, some we probably haven't found yet. the main carcinogen(cancer causing agent) is acrolein.

It is known that use of tobacco products causes cancer, and chemical analysis has identified many components of tobacco that are known or believed to cause cancer, but it is unclear which components or components are primarily responsible for the cancer causing properties of tobacco. (Some of those components are present at very, very low levels, and the burning of tobacco will actually create additional chemicals that do not exist in the unburned product.

There are currently 69 known carcinogens in a single puff of cigarette smoke. Go D.A.R.E.! The IARC, part of the World Health Organisation, lists nearly 1,000 carcinogens. The vast majority of these are in the (smoke-free) 'fresh air' we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, the prescription drugs we take, are produced endogenously by the human body, are present in the personal hygiene and cosmetic products we use and the products we clean our houses with.........
