Cause - the unusual case of a slave who had been taken on to free soil, but did not apply for his freedom until he was back in slave country.

Effect - the decision of the High Court that property, including slave-property, was sacred according to the Constitution, and that no state could declare itself to be free soil.

Result - intense debates between two senatorial candidates, the well-known Stephen Douglas and the unknown Abraham Lincoln, over whether it was possible to ban slavery anywhere. This raised the temperature of the whole slavery debate, and brought war closer.
