A firework often has two ingredients: gunpowder and a colouring agent.

Gunpowder is a mxture of charcoal, sulfur and potassium nitrate. This includes the elements carbon and sulfur (in elemental form), as well as potassium as ions and nitrogen and oxygen in a radical compound. Together, they create the explosion and release of energy that spreads the colouring agent and makes it brighter.

For colour, different elements are used to give each colour. They include many metals, as these give the brightest and widest range of colours and are stable enough to be kept in the firework until used. A list of them can be found at the related links. The purpose of the colouring agent is quite simply to make it coloured.

Stars are lumps made out of perchlorate, black powder, and the chemical compounds that create the various colors of fireworks.
