Depending on your department, whether you are paid or volunteer and how many hours you are going to be at your department will determine what you will be doing on that day. Most EMT's have to do a truck check at the beginning of their shift. You will check to make sure the interior of your truck is stocked and clean. You will make sure all your emergency lights are in operation. You will make sure all the fluids in the engine are within the normal range. (Having something fail while on a 911 call is the worst thing.) You may have department duties depending on if you work for a fire department or a hospital. At a fire department, you may be asked to do house keeping duties, go over charts for quality assurance, assist in the training of new individuals. On other days, you may be asked to participate in special events (such as a local parade, providing EMT service for an event in your area.) And the biggest part of your day will be responding to 911 calls. Ambulances get called for everything from vehicle accidents to structure fires (firemen need rehab and trained people on site during their work), as well as regular patient emergencies.
Assessing the condition of patients who are injured or taken ill suddenly, driving and crewing an ambulance, responding to an endless amount of calls for medical assistance at accidents and many many more .
Im not an EMT yet but I'm currently enrolled in the EMT class. So I'd say driving the ambulance, lifting people/heavy objects, daily inventory, hospital transfers, paperwork, hooking up patients to O2, patient interviews, and that's pretty much it for daily stuff. Cardiac emergencies would probably be the most common emergencies. At least that's what I've gathered from speaking to EMTS around here. Theres a lot more types of incidences but they wouldn't really be daily occurrences.
Peramedics do different things daily depending on the different calls that they get. Their duties may range from assisting women with childbirth, to performing CPR on person who is not breathing. They also provide medical care to an automobile accident victims, assist with bad astma attacks, and help victims of shootings. Their daily duites vary greatly.
