Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, as I expect you know are the next generation in film viewing. By using a shorter more accurate blue laser instead of the standard red laser more information can be stored on the same size disk. This makes them ideal for high definition films. The main difference between them is capacity, Bluray can hold 25Gb on a single layer disk, and 50Gb on a dual layer disk, whereas HD-DVD is only able to hold 15Gb single layer, and 30Gb dual layer. HD-DVD disks are more reliable than BR disks, though only marginally so. Another point worth looking at is the price of the players. Currently a HD-DVD player is around £350 GBP, whereas a Bluray player is around £450 GBP. A much more sensible idea is to buy either a PS3 (£400-ish with bluray player built in), or a XBox 360 (£300-ish with expandable HD-DVD drive). Pay around the same price for a HD player and get the ability to play games as well. LG are supposedly developing a player which will play either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I heard about this a month or so ago, and don't know what stage they are at. As it stands, things are very tight, however I would say HD-DVD is currently more available and cheaper.

dvds are a standard definition media that stores sd video. Blu-rays are the next gen media for high definition video.

also, blu-rays have 7.1 surround sound and dvds have 5.1 surround sound so blu-rays are better.

also blu-rays are more scratch resistant than dvds.

blu-rays can store more video and special features than dvds.

blu-rays are more robust.

blu-rays are more expensive

HD refers to the technology of high definition television and includes the video formats, televisions capable of displaying HD content and all production and storage equipment used in making and delivering high definition video.

Bluray refers specifically to a disc storage medium. It is the storage format used for HD video content and is therefore classed as being HD technology. However, Bluray refers only to the disc format.

Blu-Rays can only be played on Blu-Ray machines and HDTVs. Blu-Rays have a special hardcoat layer that makes it more resistant to scratches. Blu-Rays hold up to 5 times more data than a DVD can. And Blu-Rays are a bit more expensive than DVDs.

While they are physically very similar (thin metal layer encased in plastic); the primary difference is in the data storage encoded onto the disc.

A BluRay disc is designed to hold a much larger amount of data storage in comparison to a DVD. Technically speaking even a CD is essentially the same physical concept, thin metal information disc protected by a layer of plastic.

Each generation of disc encoding has resulted in around 5 to 10 times more data storage. Much like how DVDs are 5 to 10 times more storage than CD's, Blu Rays (and their now deceased cousin the HD-DVD) offer 5 to 10 times more storage capacity than DVDs. (the 5 to 10 times depends on whether a single layer or a dual layer is used)

For movies of course this higher amount of data storage means that clearer pictures are achievable. In order to display higher definition images a larger number of pixels must be generated for every frame of the film, which greatly increases the size of the data file required to store the film.

HD DVDs and BluRay DVDs have some things in common. However, BueRay discs can hold more information since they have a tighter track. BueRay discs have a thinner disc, with a special coating to protect them. This makes BluRay more expensive.

Blue-ray has a larger capacity than a HD. Almost double the rate actually.

HD DVD's are cheaper but there are more titles on Blue-Ray then HD. Both have excellent sound but Blue-Ray wins upon comparison.

And they actually won overall now. HD DVD threw up it's white flag and announced that they no longer would produce HD DVD material. This launched Blue-Ray as the official future of high definition entertainment. So if you are looking to get any high quality movie or dvd player... look for it in Blue-Ray. Otherwise I would still stick with regular DVD's and players because the future isn't here just yet which means right now anything Blue-Ray is really expensive.

What is better Blu-ray or HD?

Bluray and HD DVD are the two trade names for high definition discs and players. Bluray is by far the better choice for the simple reason that HD DVD was withdrawn in 2009. Bluray had won the HD format war so HD DVD quietly left the stores. There are a number of HD DVD discs around as well as the players. As the two systems are in-compatible, don't trash your HD DVD player just yet. It will still do a do job of playing the HD DVD discs you still have.

What kind of DVD player will play HD DVDs?

To play a high definition DVD, you need a high definition DVD player. There are two types available currently. HD DVD, developed by Toshiba is one and BluRay, developed by Sony is the other. They are not compatible, so an HD DVD will not play on a BluRay player and a BluRay disc will not play on an HD DVD player. BluRay looks like it is the winner in the format war between the two companies over the last years so it is likely that Toshiba's format will disappear in the coming months. Note that HD DVD can refer to the Toshiba format but it can also refer to high definition DVDs in general.

Is there a difference in HD DVDs and Blu-ray?

HD DVD and Bluray were competing high definition disc formats. In 2009 HD DVD was withdrawn from sale as it became apparent that Bluray had won the HD disc battle. The two formats are not compatible so HD DVDs can only be played on an HD DVD player.

Can you play an HD DVD in a Blu-ray player?

The introduction of high definition discs saw two formats launched. Bluray is one and HD DVD was the other. The format war was won by the Bluray system and HD DVD was withdrawn in 2009. Both Bluray and HD DVD are high definition players but note that "HD DVD" is the name of the format and is confusingly close to the generic description of high definition disc players. Bluray and HD DVD are not compatible so a disc of one type will not play on the other format. There are a handful of dual format disc players but they were expensive and few were sold. If you have HD DVD discs then you need to hand on to an HD DVD player if you want to watch them. All high definition discs on sale now are Bluray and of course will need a Bluray player to play them.

Can you upgrade your HD DVD player to play Blu-ray discs?

HD DVD and Bluray are both high definition disc formats but they were not only competitive formats but incompatible formats as well. While the battle for the HD market was in progress a handful of players were sold that would support both formats. These players were expensive and very few were ever sold. Unfortunately, HD DVD only players will not play Bluray and Bluray players will not play HD DVD discs. It is still worth keeping HD DVD players as they are the only players capable of HD DVD discs.

Do dvd's have to be marked HD in order to play in HD?

There are three storage formats for video discs: A DVD will carry standard definition video and will be described simply as "DVD". DVDs can be played on standard definition DVD players as well as either of the HD disc players mentioned below. Regardless of the player used, the image will always be standard definition. HD DVD is one of the two HD disc formats. The disc will be described as an "HD DVD". This format was withdrawn in 2009 when Bluray won the HD format war. HD DVD players and discs are still around but none are sold commercially now. These discs can only be played on HD DVD players. Bluray is the other HD video disc format. They will always be described as "Bluray". They can only be played on Bluray players and will not operate on standard DVD players. Nor will they play on an HD DVD player. Note: HD DVD is the product trade name of the now defunct high definition disc format. It is also commonly used in reference to an disc that supports high definition video. Therefore, is it sometimes used as a reference to Bluray. Although Bluray is a high definition DVD, it is NOT an "HD DVD". As the HD DVD format moves into the history books of television, the term is used more and more to refer to Buray even though it is strictly not the correct term.

Is blu ray better than other DVD players?

BluRay is the name of a high definition DVD player, developed by Sony. The alternative is HDDVD released by Toshiba at around the same time. In terms of image quality, there is little to choose between them but it is commercial considerations that separate them. BluRay has captured the majority of the market and most of the large distribution companies have opted to support BluRay rather than HD DVD. The battle between the two formats looks to have been won by BluRay and Toshiba are reluctantly admitting that HD DVD will give way to Sony's product. While HD DVD is not quite dead yet, opinions within the trade suggest that HD DVD will not be around for a great deal longer. Both formats will play standard definition DVDs so they will replace existing DVD players.

What are the differences between Blu-ray and HD-dvd?

Blue Ray has almost double the lines of resolutions as HD-DVD, so therefore, double the picture quality.Actually, Blu-Ray is high definition (HD). But if by HD you meant the HD DVD, those are discontinued

Is a flashcard optical storage?

No. Optical storage uses lasers to "see" the media (e.g. CD, DVD, HD-DVD and BluRay)
