  • Fractures in the Earth's surface, a process referred to as taphrogeny, result in formation of fault-block mountains.
  • If there are two parallel faults, the crustal block between them may either rise to produce a horst-block mountain or fall to produce a rift valley.
  • A fallen block is known as a graben. The term block mountain may be applied to tilted fault-block and complex faulted uplands.
  • Block mountains exist in countries like Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, where they form basin-and-range landscapes.
  • Uplifted blocks may have younger covering formations stripped off them, leaving relict landforms as in the Harz and Black Forest terrains of Germany and in the Massif Central of France.
  • Fold mountains
  • are mountains formed mainly by the effects of folding on layers within the upper part of the Earth's crust. In the time before either plate tectonic theory developed, or the internal architecture of thrust belts became well understood, the term was used for most mountain belts, such as the Himalayas.

A volcano is made from solidified molten rock (magma) that was extruded onto the surface to form the mountain.

A fold mountain is made of sedimentary rocks that have been squashed up by two colliding continents.

What are the Himalayan mountains a result of?

The Himalayan mountains are the result of the Indian tectonic plate pressing hard (among the fastest-moving plates in the world) northward into the Eurasian plate. The Himalayan mountains are folded mountains, as opposed to volcanoes; they are the result of the land being lifted up by the pressure between two plates.
