Well, writing a news report- say, for an article or a magazine- is usually factual without belaying opinions. You have to cut straight to the point in a way to entertain and keep you readers.

Technical is a vague word to describe it. From what I understand it would be similar to a news article or an essay, perhaps. It might have a certain structure.

Literary is also vague but something easier to explain. There is, of course, poetry and story, mostly. In poetry you have all different types and in story there's fiction and non-fiction; it branches out from there. In literary you can have an easier flow, more breathing room, and can take liberties on your own style and what you do as long as you follow rules involved for that type of writing, otherwise it doesn't work.

Technical writing concerns a specific technical topic. It is brief, logical and explanatory. It is often in basic or simplified language, but may include techical language or jargon. It is designed to communicate information rather than to examine the entire scope of the subject.

Traditional or conventional writing can be narrative, descriptive, persuasive, eloquent, or flowery. It can be on any topic and include whatever the writer feels is appropriate. However, as the reader may have little knowledge of the subject involved, any details should be accompanied by the basic information required to understand them.

Academic writing primarily deals with topics and thesis statements regarding a variety of academic fields, such as literature or psychology. This type of writing is done most often by college students, professors, researchers, or experts in their fields. Technical writing has to do with writing about certain technical fields such as engineering, and it often utilized the jargon and terminology that would make sense only to those who are specialized in that field.

There are many differences between technical and academic writing. Technical writing generally consists of taking a complicated concept and simplifying it for the reader. This is evident in instruction manuals and employee handbooks.

Academic writing, on the other hand, can include analysis and opinion. Also, it often requires specific use of references. Some technical writing may have references, but most does not.

Finally, the most obvious difference, outside of those taking a technical writing degree, would be that one is done for school and the other is a career path.

"Technical writing conveys specific information about a technical subject to a specific audience for a specific purpose… The words and graphics of technical writing are meant to be practical: that is, to communicate a body of factual information that will help an audience understand a subject or carry out a task." A majority of technical writing involves revising, editing, and improving existing documents, not creating new documents.

Characteristics of Technical Writing:

• Clarity - easily understood by intended audience

• Accuracy - factual, correct, free from bias

• Comprehensiveness - all necessary information included

• Accessibility - headings, indexes, table of contents

• Conciseness - clear without excess verbiage

• Correctness - grammatical and follows conventions

While general writing, the writer must place himself in the shoes of a reader to see the effect of his own writing. Writing a weak piece of prose is not that serious when compared to a piece full of errors. This is when the readers get confused and distracted. People respect high quality writing and tend to take the writer seriously when the piece is error free and the message comes out clearly.
