The Caribs and Arawaks were both tribes that lived in the Caribbean region.

The Arawaks were made of several tribes including Taino, Lucayan, Nepoya, Sepoya, and Igneri. They were peaceful people who grew crops and made pottery. They invented the hammock which the Spanish quickly adopted for use on their ships.

The Carib tribes were more warlike and traveled to fish and to fight others to take their possessions. They revered the bones of their ancestors and used the burned fat of their enemies in battle rituals. The Spanish labeled them cannibals because it was easier to justify stealing the lands and enslaving the Caribs.

When the first Europeans reached the Caribbean, they encountered three groups of inhabitans: The Siboneys (mostly living on Cuba and Puerto Rico) The Caribs and Arwaks living in small groups and tribes throughout the Caribbean islands. Few of them survived on Dominica, St.Vincent adn Trinidad. The Caribs were fighters. as well raiding the more peacefull Arawaks - also called Tainos - as fighting the Spanish and Bristish invaders and colonists. The Tainos were the most cooperative. But that did not help them to survive on most islands. They were the first to be enslaved and diminished in numbers, until little of them was left, except mixed blood in many Caribbean people of today. Especially Taino women were favoured by esoecially Spanish colonists, as they were acording to European taste exotic beauties, and made good wifes for many of the colonists, who rweached in great numbers, but acompanied by few women from their home countries. Caribs were not only hostile but also considered of less apealing apearance, as they were kind of stocky and wrinkly. ) I myself still know representants of both groups in Trinidad. Even most of them have mixed more and more.
