The male and female pelvic areas vary in a number of ways, as required by the differences in internal organs and their function. The most obvious difference is a shorter, broader pelvis in females, which is limited by the need to articulate the hips and legs (to walk upright in a normal manner).
Characteristics of Male Pelvis :
- Bone are taller, heavier, and thicker
- More prominent bone markings
- Obturator foramen is round
- Pubic arch v-shaped
- Pelvic inlet heart-shaped
- Smaller pelvic outlet smaller
- Ischipubic rami is more everted
- Sciatic notch is narrower
- Subpubic arch is more acute
- Ischial spine is projected inwards
- Acetabulum is larger
Characteristics of Female Pelvis :
- Bones are lighter and less dense
- Wider / shallower profile
- Larger superior and inferior apertures
- Obturator foramen is oval
- Pubic arch wider
- Pelvic inlet oval-shaped
- Ischiopubic rami is less everted
- Sciatic notch is wider
- Subpubic arch is wider
- Ischial spine is projected outwards
- Acetabulum is smaller
