The male and female pelvic areas vary in a number of ways, as required by the differences in internal organs and their function. The most obvious difference is a shorter, broader pelvis in females, which is limited by the need to articulate the hips and legs (to walk upright in a normal manner).

  • Smaller pelvic outlet smaller
  • Ischipubic rami is more everted
  • Sciatic notch is narrower
  • Subpubic arch is more acute
  • Ischial spine is projected inwards
  • Acetabulum is larger

Characteristics of Female Pelvis :

  • Bones are lighter and less dense
  • Wider / shallower profile
  • Larger superior and inferior apertures
  • Obturator foramen is oval
  • Pubic arch wider
  • Pelvic inlet oval-shaped
  • Ischiopubic rami is less everted
  • Sciatic notch is wider
  • Subpubic arch is wider
