A veterinarian is a doctor, so in that respect they are the same. However, if you are asking what the difference between a human physician and a veterinarian, the major difference is in species treated. Human physicians (MD/DO degree) are legally only allowed to provide medical services to humans; veterinarians (DVM/VMD degree) are legally only allowed to provide medical services to non-human animals.

∙ 11y agoThe professions of veterinarian and human physician are quite similar - both are medical professionals who examine, diagnose and treat patients. The major difference is veterinarians are taught to treat a variety of species by focusing on comparative anatomy and physiology while physicians are taught to treat one species with the specific equipment and medications available to them.

∙ 7y agoVeterinarians and human physicians are both medical professionals who examine, diagnose and treat illness and injury in their patients. Their educational backgrounds are both biomedical, relying heavily on scientific inquiry. Many of the individual dieases and injuries are similar between the patients, and the diagnosis and treatment also tend to be similar. For instance, Type II Diabetes in humans and canine diabetes are both diagnosed via glucosuria (sugar in the urine) and hyperglucosemia (high blood sugar). Treatment is dietary modification, regular blood sugar checks and insulin shots.
However, veterinarians are qualified to treat animals but not humans; conversely, human physicians are qualified to treat humans but not animals. While there are many similarities, there are also medically important differences that may not be apparent without the appropriate educational background.

∙ 12y agoThe only difference between an animal and human doctor is the type of patient. Diagnosis and treatment are the goals of any doctor. Veterinarians can have specialties like human doctors, but they tend to encompass many more types of work than human doctors. Vets can do dental work (whereas humans would go to a dentist) and cosmetic work (a pet owner may choose to have a dog's ears and tail cropped, or a cat declawed). The only difference is that veterinarians can legally euthanize a patient (assisted human suicide is not allowed, except for the execution of prisoners).

∙ 10y agoA veterinarian is a doctor, a Doctor Who treats animal patients. An M.D, or medical doctor, treats human patients. A veterinarian and an M.D. have similar, rigourous educational backgrounds. Of course, many of the illnesses and injuries that animals develop are different than those that people suffer from. (People don't get infected dewclaws, for example, or feline leukemia.) Therefore, a veterinarian's course of instruction is different from an M.D.'s. Also, much of the work that a veterinarian does on animals is for the convenience of their owners, not for the health of the animals. Castration, declawing, ear clipping, tail docking and debarking are some examples of procedures that are usually or only performed on animals.
