Where is the mintmark on a 1943 Australian Penny?

Australian 1920 pennies were minted in both Melbourne and Sydney. On the reverse side underneath the word "PENNY", is a scroll.

Coins minted in Melbourne will have a small dot under the scroll, coins minted in Sydney will have a small dot above the scroll.

Some coins have no dot and could have been minted at either the Melbourne or Sydney Mints.

The "no dots" coins are classified as rare.

This means of determining the mint, only applies to 1920 pennies.

The 1943 Australian Penny mintmark -

• No mintmark if it was minted in Melbourne
• "." after the "Y" in PENNY if it was minted in Perth (PENNY.)
• "I" under King George's head if it was minted in Bombay

A 1942 Australian bronze Penny minted in Bombay will have a small "I" under King George's head on the obverse. This mintmark only applies to 1942 and 1943 Halfpennies and Pennies.

A 1942 Australian bronze Penny minted in Perth will have a "." after the "Y" in PENNY (PENNY.) on the reverse.

For reasons I am unable to explain or even guess at, some 1919 Australian Pennies do have a mintmark.

On the reverse side of the 1911 to 1936 Australian Penny, there are two scrolls. One above the "ONE PENNY" inscription and one below the inscription.

On 1919 Australian Pennies specifically, there may be a dot above the top scroll or, the may be a dot below the bottom scroll. Either way, the coins were minted at the Melbourne Mint.

This meaning of mintmarks applies only to the 1919 Australian Penny.

The 1920 Australian Penny has a similar system of mintmarks, but the meaning is different.

You would have to be much more specific about which penny you are referring to.

Most Australian Pennies have no mintmark.

Australian Pennies with the kangaroo reverse, minted from 1938 to 1964 were mostly minted at the Melbourne Mint and have no mintmark.

Pennies with a dot after the Y in PENNY (PENNY.), a dot after the A in AUSTRALIA (AUSTRALIA.), or a dot between the K and the G above the kangaroos tail (K.G) were all minted at the Perth Mint.

Some 1942 Pennies were minted at the Bombay Mint and have an I under the bust of George VI.

Some 1951 Pennies were minted at the Royal Mint London and have a PL after the Y in PENNY.

Australian Pennies minted from 1911 to 1936 were mostly minted at either the Melbourne or Sydney Mints and have no mintmark.
