There are different fire extinguishers for different types of fires.
Fires are classified according to the material that is burning, often using A, B, C, D, and K classifications. These are fully described elsewhere, but basically refer to
Some fire extinguishers will work on A, B and C, or just one or two of those. Those for D and K are usually selected especially for the particular hazard.
Class A-normal burnables ie. paper, wood grass
Class B-Combustible liquids, fuels, oils
Class C-Electrical..fuse panels, wires electrical drvices
Class D-Metals
Class K- cooking oils and fats
Different types of extinguishers are used depending on what type of material is burning. Class A extinguishers are usually just water which works on wood and paper type materials but would make a flammable liquids fire worse. Class B would be used on flammable liquids and class C is used for energized electrical equipment. Class D is a special type used for burning metals like aluminum. Various chemicals and agents are used but the most common is A:B:C dry chemical which has most uses.
I can only think of three types, but I'm no fire science guy. There is the CO2 extinguisher, the chemical foam extinguisher, and the chemical powder extinguisher. They ALL work on exactly the same principals. Fire must have three things to exist: Fuel, Oxygen, and Heat. Knock out any one of those things, and fire cannot burn. CO2, foam, and powder all displace oxygen and absorb heat.
Water fire extinguishers are for fires involving paper, wood or plastic type materials. Foam fire extinguishers are for fires involving flammable liquids like petrol or paraffin. Dry poweder extinguishers are to be used on flammable gases such as butane.
to put out fire In other words, because there are different types of fires there are different types of fire extinguishers. The label will tell you what type of fire it is designed for.
FIRE extinguishers are used to put out fire.
The different types of fire extinguishers are listed in classes according to which is appropriate for what type of fire. Below is an article which goes into the different classes of fire extinguishers.
There are different types of fire extinguishers. For a boat it would be best to get a portable type like those designed for use in automobiles.
There are 5 different types of fires. Class A,B,C,D, and K. For a Class C fire, (electrical fire) you would not want to put out that fire with a fire extinguisher that was water in it. Water and electricity is not a good mix.
Many different types of fire extinguishers exist and many different gases are used. A water extinguisher may contain pressurized air. Other types use carbon dioxide or compressed nitrogen. There are also halogenated extinguishers containing proprietary mixtures of fire-suppression gases.
Extinguishers with a Class C rating (C can be used on Currents)
There are several types of fire extinguishers that one should purchase that rely on their compact form and low weight such as Alert 5 Rechargeable fire extinguishers, and Tundra Tundra extinguishers.
liquids
normally red, but different fires require different extinguishers which will vary in color.
Portable fire extinguishers are provided in case there is a small fire that can be quickly extinguished, while occupants are being moved away from the fire and out of the building, if necessary. Some fire extinguishers are automatic, such as those used in commercial grease-duct hoods over cooking appliances, and activate to stop the fire even if nobody is there. Others are manual and may come in different types for different fires (e.g., A, B, C, D, K).
There is one class of fire extinguisher for each of the 5 classes of fires: A,B,C,D,K. There are different mechanical types of extinguishers, based upon how their internal agent is expelled: contained pressure, external pressure cartridge, and manual pump. There are dozens of different types of agents found inside various fire extinguishers, ranging from ordinary air-pressurized water to many exotic gases and dry chemicals.
