Using a recording device to learn has its advantages, but also some disadvantages. One big one is that you tend to "tune out" the actual lecture because you think you're getting everyting on the recorder - it's much better to pay close attention to the speaker so that you understand anything they happen to write down, any visual presentations, and to be able to ask questions if you don't understand a point.
