What are the drawbacks of interracial relationships?

Lots of heartaches and dis respect from other people that never like other culture or skin color. People are selfish when it comes to other skin color, I know because the family of the man I married never accepted me for who I am. But I will say, be proud, walk with your head up and ignore those people that look at the skin color.

Overall, most of the drawbacks would be the same as with other relationships. Here are some of the challenges that are specific to interracial relationships:

1. Mixed race relationships are not accepted well in all areas. In such places, you may feel isolated or judged. Sometimes mixed couples living in such areas put up a wall of isolation around themselves. That in turn might engender more negative sentiments from others, since this may be misinterpreted as feelings of superiority.

2. Different cultural assumptions. Behaviors that are normal for one partner may grate at the nerves of another, since they come from different cultural backgrounds. That might be what drew them together, but once they are together for a while, these differences in personality, basic assumptions about life and culture, and different ways of thinking and doing things can threaten the relationship. What may be normal within one ethnic culture may feel disrespectful or abusive to a member of another. For instance, if someone raised around male chauvinism met a feminist, regardless of ethnic group, there could be problems. Keep in mind that while personality clashes may be more common between partners of different cultures, any couple from any mixture of ethnic groups can experience them.

3. A perception of pressure from the partner. One or both partners may feel that they may have to change to be accepted by the other. If both are strong, this should not be an issue. But if either chose a partner because they wanted someone who they perceived as weak, it could be an issue.

4. In the past, biracial children had a challenge in finding a peer group to accept them. That is no longer the problem it once was, since children are now raised to be more colorblind. There is also less pressure these days for them to belong to either one peer group or another.

5. In some cases, the extended family of a mixed couple might not get along. That isn't as much of an issue these days since everyone is more accepting.

6. There is a possibility that one or both partners may lose some of their culture and identity. But this is all a matter of perspective, since we all learn and grow from being around one another. A healthy home environment is more important than ethnic integrity.
