The duties of a waiter is to wait on the customers. This might include:

  • bringing the customer(s) the printed menu(s)
  • the customer(s) water, coffee, tea, or other beverage(s)
  • taking the customer(s) order(s)
  • delivering the order(s) to the cook staff
  • picking up the prepared dishes from the kitchen
  • serving the customer(s)
  • checking back with the customer(s) after they have been eating
  • taking the customer(s) order(s) for desserts
  • making sure the customer(s) experience is pleasant and enjoyable
  • providing the customer(s) with an itemized bill.

In addition, many waiters and waitresses do double-duty as "bus boys" who remove the used dishes of the last customer(s), clean the tables, and prepare the area for the next diners.

Waiters and waitresses may also do light vacuuming within the restaurant.

The waiter is the person who takes the customers order, passes it to the kitchen, then delivers the food to the customer.

The customers whole experience of the restaurant is usually determined by how well the waiter performs his duties. It is very important for the waiter to become a professional friend to the customer and do everything possible to make sure the customer enjoys the experience and comes back again.

The waiter should be able to advise the customer on how the numerous dishes on the menu are prepared and make recommendations to customers who are unsure or struggling to make a choice.

A good waiter is there when needed but doesnt hang around when not needed.
