Well inhaling any kind of smoke has a harmful effect on your lungs/throat; it really depends on how much you smoke - while some people smoke few grams a day, others just have couple of joints on weekends. Daily tokers will develop significant tolerance - after a couple of months one may need to smoke double the original dosage to get the desired effect; but again, it varies greatly from person to person.
Occasional or moderate use of marijuana does negligible physical harm - it doesn't kill brain cells, doesn't cause cancer nor harm liver or kidneys and it's physically impossible to fatally overdose on it.
Marijuana also has some medicinal properties that I guess kinda make up for harmful physical effects: marijuana is an expectorant which basically means it helps to clean the lungs of tars and other stuff that you cough up (produced by burning plant material); it also dilates blood vessels making it easier for you body to take up oxygen and get rid of CO2. It has a bunch of pharmacological effects but I'm not going to name them now.
As for harmful effects on the mind: idk much about them, but marijuana could precipitate dormant mental conditions, so people with family history of such conditions should be careful. Smoking cannabis can also diminish motivation and make it hard to focus ones mind and concentrate. There's more to it, but I'm just to lazy to look it up...
