Enzymes are biological catalysts that increase the rate of a biological reaction. They have several properties to carry out their functions as catalysts: firstly they have active sites that induce bond-bending and stretching so as to reduce the activation energy required for the reaction to occur. They also can provide an optimal environment for the reaction to take place, i.e. a low pH environment.

There are thousands of enzymes in humans; many of these have not been identified, and many more than have been identified have unknown functions. However, two large classes of enzymes are proteases, which break down proteins, and DNA polymerases, which build DNA molecules.
