At the top level there is a: * Transmitter * Medium * Receiver A Transmitter includes: * an Input Device such as a Microphone or a Keyboard * one or more Amplifiers and Filters to increase signal levels and remove unwanted frequency signals * a Modulator to impress the signal of interest (voice for example) onto a Radio Carrier * additional Amplifiers and Filters * Upconverters to change the frequency of signals as required * Local Oscillators to supply signals to the Upconverter and/or Modulator * an Antenna (or suitable coupling device) to efficiently radiate the Radio Carrier into the Medium * a Power Supply and necessary Cabling and Circuit Boards * a Box to (in the words of the TV Saleman on an episode of The Simpsons) "prevent fall apart". * In addition, modern digitally implemented Transmitters contain Analog to Digital convertors as required (and often, Digital to Analog convertors for subsidiary functions) The Medium can be Empty Space (including the atmosphere), a Wire Cable, an Optical Cable, or other things of that nature. A Receiver includes: * an Antenna (or suitable coupling device) to efficiently capture the signal from the Medium * various Amplifiers, Filters, and Downconverters to increase signal levels, remove unwanted siganls, and change signal frequencies * a Demodulator to extract the signal of interest from the Radio Carrier * Local Oscillators to supply signals to the Downconverter and/or Demodulator * additional Amplifiers and Filters * an Output Device to convey the signal of interest to a human such as a Speaker or Monitor * a Power Supply and necessary Cabling and Circuit Boards * another Box also to prevent fall apart. * In addition, modern digitally implemented Receivers contain Digital to Analog convertors as required (and often, Analog to Digital convertors for subsidiary functions) * Also, modern digitally implemented Transmitters and Receivers may dispense with such discreet components as Filters, Up and Downconverters, and Local Oscillators, replacing them with their digital equivalents in digital hardware, either dedicated or implemented in a general purpose computer. Of course a modern Telecommunications system usually includes one or more (often many more) Computers to control it all!
