Hi, so this is what I've revised so far for negative feedback and specifically the human oestrous cycle for my summer exams.Okay, so the female human oestrous cycle lasts on average around 28 days.

From day 1-5, the lining of the uterus starts to break down. The pituitary gland releases FSH ( follicle stimulating hormone), this hormone stimulates the follicles in the ovaries to grow and mature. As they do so, they release small amounts of oestrogen which causes the lining of the uterus to slowly rebuild. Meanwhile these small amounts of oestrogen inhibits the release of FSH from the pituitary gland (negative feedback).

At around day 10, the levels of oestrogen reach a critical peak, this level stimulates the pituitary gland to release( positive feedback) FSH and LH ( luteinising hormone). This surge in LH causes the follicles in the ovaries to release an egg at around day 14, this is ovulation.

This surge in LH also causes the follicles to mature into a structure known as the corpus luteum, this structure releases small amounts of oestrogen and large amounts of progesterone. This helps maintain the uterus lining and also inhibits the release of LH and FSH from the pituitary gland.( negative feedback)

If fertilisation does not occur the corpus luteum degenerates, hence the levels of progesterone decreases and so the secretion of FSH and LH into the blood is no longer inhibited and so the lining begins to break down and the cycle starts to repeat itself. Back to day 1.

The four stages of the menstrual cycle includes:

  • Menstruation: when the uterine lining sheds ready for the new cycle.
  • Follicular phase: when the ovum in the ovary matures ready for ovulation.
  • Ovulation: when a mature egg is released from the ovary.
  • Luteal/proliferate phase: uterine lining build-up ready for potential pregnancy.
