There are 78 cards.

22 are so-called Major Trumps. Batons represent energy and enterprise - a bit like the energy of springtime. The Page is a younger, enthusiastic person who takes the initiative, but who is inexperienced and that may be a good thing since they don't imagine they can fail; but it may be a bad thing is they are unrealistic about what can reasonably be done.

There are 40 Minor Trumps - the Ace through to the 10 of each of the suits.

Aces are beginnings or show the early stages of something. The Ace of Cups can be the beginning of a love affair; or show that the couple, even though they have been married for years, are still keen about each other.

You are best to get the Rider-Waite deck for around $12 because there is a picture on each card and you can get a meaning from the picture.

The 3 of Swords shows a red heart with three swords through it. We know the heart is courage, so this card shows pain, frustration, disappointment, heartache, and so on.

Remember this: it's not so much what a card means, but more: What sense does any card make when answering any particular question.

There are 14 Cups or hearts (depending on the deck), 14 Swords, 14 Wands, 14 Pentacles and 22 "royalty" cards (these are what I call people cards or hierarchy cards. Ex. The Fool, The Moon, The emperor, etc. etc.)
