Here are the main functions of the female reproductive system.

  • Produce estrogen and progesterone hormones.
  • Develop reproductive cells.
  • House the growing fetus.
  • Allow for childbirth.
  • Provide pleasure for the woman and her partner(s).

Also there are some minor role functions:

  • Influence behavior, such as partner-seeking during ovulation
  • Give off certain scents to attract partners
  • Affect metabolism to allow the body to store nutrition for offspring

Organs and terminology of the female reproductive system

cervix: The end of the uterus and connects to the vagina.

endometrium: The lining of the uterus

fallopian tube: The tube which the egg travel use to travel to the uterus.

ovaries: Release egg cells out to the uterus and if the egg that is released is not fertilized, it will be removed by the process that called menstruation.

ovulation: The process of releasing an egg to the fallopian tube.

uterus: Where the child develops.

vagina: Passageway of menstrual flow. Female organ for coitus (sex); receives male penis. Passageway for the fetus during birth is where the baby comes out.
