The three fundamental forces are the gravitational force, the strong nuclear force, and the electro-weak force. The electro-weak is commonly thought of as two forces, namely the electromagnetic force and the weak nuclear force.

The gravitational force is the force that causes every particle with mass to attract every other particle with mass. The strong nuclear force holds together quarks to form protons, neutrons, and other subatomic particles. The electro-weak force is responsible for both holding the nucleus of an atom together and causing charged particles to either attract or repel each other.
