Guide lines mostly are used to keep the letters aligned to a straight horizontal line. However, guide lines can also be drawn to help keeping the stroke width or slant angle constant. They can be drawn with chalk, or a hard pencil, depending on the surface, and usually get removed, once the color is dry.
