The use of oxygen can sometimes have harmful side effects. Specifically, oxygen is very flammable, so it is best to never use it near fire. Additionally, some collectible items can fall apart when they are exposed to oxygen. This applies particularly to paper items.

Oxygen is highly reactive and toxic to many basic metabolic processes. However aerobic organisms have developed many ways to counter or reverse most of these toxic effects. But breathing pure oxygen at full air pressure (15 psi) for extended periods can stress these protective mechanisms. Many premature babies in early incubators were injured by toxic oxygen levels before it was realized this was a problem.

What is the purpose behind breathing in and out of a paper bag?

If you hyperventilate you are most likely to raise blood oxygen to a level too high for your body to cope with. Breathing into and out of a paper bag will lower your oxygen to safer levels because you are now breathing carbon di-oxide. A few minutes 2/3 only or you will lower oxygen to much.

is oxygen poisonous yes or no?

Well yes but actually no... inhaling too much oxygen can cause nausea and dizziness and maybe even death. But breathing it in normally won't kill you.

If you mean body, it depends, under 30 seconds most likely fine, over 30 seconds slight pain when breathing deep, over 1 min there will be problem. you can get hyperoxia or oxygen toxicity. try breathing at rapid rate for as long as you can and you will suddenly feel dizzy or lightheaded, this would be one of the immediate effects. try the link for more info:

Why can't you hold your breath too long after breathing in a bag for 2 minutes?

Holding your breath depends on oxygen in your system. After breathing in a bag, you've been depriving yourself of oxygen (breathing in what you breath out - carbon dioxide) and so you're oxygen starved.

Can you speed your breathing?

The rates of breathing of people in an overcrowded area increase?

Because the local rise in carbon dioxide levels triggers a feedback system that increases breathing to increase the blood oxygen level. There is probably some anxiety effect in some people too.

Can you get to much oxygen and what will happen?

Yes, it is possible to have too much oxygen in your body, known as hyperoxia. This can lead to oxygen toxicity, causing symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, breathing difficulties, and in severe cases, lung damage. It is important to follow medical guidance when using supplemental oxygen to prevent this.

Why does your breathing rate increase when you get active?

Breathing faster will only drag more oxygen into the lungs, but to get more oxygen to the muscles it has to be picked up and carried into the body by the blood. So the heart has to pump more too, tho move the oxygen from the lungs to the muscles.
