The bone cells that break down bone are called osteoclasts (bone+breaker). There are others called osteoblasts (bone+builder) which build bone. Usually there are about equal numbers of them in your body.
They are always breaking and rebuilding in a process called bone remodeling. This is a life long process and your body will replace bones at a 10% rate per year.
As you grow older, the osteoclasts out number the osteoblasts and the process of osteopenia (less dense bone) and osteoporosis ( weak bone) occurs.
