Generally people who suffer from bulimia do not only suffer from short term effects because bulimia is a continuous mental disorder. Also, if a person really actually has bulimia, then it isn't just 'cured' or you can't just 'stop' because of the constant need for the high of a purge. Anyway, as a means for answering your question I will say that short term effects range from day one of bulimia symptoms up until one year of constant exhibition of symptoms.

- swollen salivary glands in cheeks

- fatigue, weakness, sleepiness

- loss of menstrual cycle (in females)

- abnormal mood swings

- dry skin, thinning hair

- heart palpitations and irregularities

- electrolyte imbalance

- high susceptibility to fainting

- persistent sore throat

- sunken eyes

- constipation

- DEATH -- bulimia doesn't discriminate to how long you've been doing it, every person is different and can die the first time they do it, some die in a year, some die after years and years of doing it. Please don't think "ohh, it can't happen to me" because it does, and I've seen it first hand.

Most of the short term side effects are similar to the long term ones, only the long term effects are more severe versions of the short term effects.

Hope this helps!

i would say that bulimia is usually long term; it really can't be "cured" forever

I'm bulimic and it started about four years ago. it's so easy to question why bulimics can't just stop but it's really hard to come up with an answer.

i remember the first day i threw up. before this, i became almost anorexic. i lost close to 30lbs in less than 2 months but then i noticed a lot of my hair fall out. and one day i fainted and i got so scared i might die, i just started eating. constantly, wanting to forget about my weight. but i couldn't.

i knew that bulimia made your teeth yellow and harmed your intestines but hey, one time isn't going to kill you? right? and ive never even heard of anyone die of bulimia; but this one time is so regretful. i didn't know what to do at first; i used a toothbrush and i guess "tickled" my throat and then i vomited. i kept doing this for a while. i noticed too that if i drank soda or some carbonated drink, i could vomit easier. and later i just used my hands. sometimes if i eat enough, i don't even need my hands.

it feels as if I've failed. at life. living has been so depressing. i felt like i couln't control my life; yet alone what i eat. and i do still feel like that. but the weirdest thing is, when i am throwing up, it feels kind of nice. not like "nice" but like forgetting. it's like a drug, for that minute, you don't need to think about anything. you're just letting out your chewed up meal and temporary forgetting every stress and torture in life.

this has been so weird for me though. i mean, no one knows about this. i hate myself though. i gained soo much weight. and ive stopped before but then i get it again and idk. ive also recently started reading about bulimia and going to these sites just to answer these random questions. in a sense, it makes me feel better, to know that i understand what i am struggling through. but i think i can stop this. i know it's about one's mindset and how he/she perceives the world.

i think I'm gonna throw up in a little bit only cus i just ate a huge dinner and my head hurts. but hey. i am going to stop

and everyone--know that bulimia sucks and it tries to take over one's life but it doesn't have to. you have control and all we need to do is fight against these challenges.

throwing up after you eat is an addiction. notice how i don't say "bulimia" because i don't believe in that word. yes i thorw up after i eat. so? that dose not mean i am a "bulimic." that's just peoples way of catagorising me. its an addiction just like a drug.... you have to want to stop. and only you decide when enough is enough for you. but just remember your worth more than what you think. and no, no one has ever died form "bulimia" just like no one has ever died form aids. you die from the strain on your weakened heart after drinking or smoking.... but im just saying.

Hello: I commend you for your input. I have suffered for many years on and off and ttoday actually reaalized what causes it, anxiety and the sexual abuse. The shame pours out of my body and I feel cleansed. Its a relief. Filling self with food is not comforting my pain, it bottles like the sexual abuse, the shame and then it feels good to purge it out of my system.

there are MANY problems associated with bulimia:

the acid in a person's stomach will eat away the lining of the esophagus (which can cause hemorrhaging), it eats away at your teeth (so you will either lose your teeth or have to get root canals), malnourishment (can cause swelling to the stomach)... and MANY more problems
